Karp Designs: Where Craft Meets Sound

Karp’s journey into acoustical design began not by intention, but by instinct—first as a lifelong musician. Music has always been second nature to him; from an early age, he found joy in playing, rehearsing, performing, creating, recording, and producing. To support his musical pursuits, he entered the world of “karpentry,” building trade show exhibits and custom cabinetry before moving into set design for film, television, and theater.

With over 30 years of experience in both music and craftsmanship, it’s no surprise that his meticulous, precision-driven artistry feels effortless. Over time, his dual passions—sound and structure—organically fused to form Karp Designs, one of Chicagoland’s leading acoustic and architectural design studios.

As an acoustical designer, Karp honors the foundational principles of the craft, but always puts people first. He designs spaces that are not only sonically superior but also deeply comfortable and inspiring. His rooms sound as good as they look—and they feel even better.

As a craftsman, Karp brings an innovative, hands-on approach to every project. Using unique materials and hand-fabricating every detail, he treats each build as a functional masterpiece. His intricate inlay work, often blending mixed media, gives his furniture and installations a signature flair. Karp is known for translating his clients’ ideas and personalities into custom, one-of-a-kind environments.

His portfolio spans a wide range of styles—from 1920s Art Deco to Moroccan-inspired interiors, Victorian-era Steampunk, futuristic Tron-themed rooms, and even rock band–themed theaters.

Outside the studio, Karp shared his world with Vader, his beloved black Pit Bull/Great Dane mix. (RIP)
